CALGARY, AB (May 28, 2015): Dr. David Swann says it is time for the new government to correct a serious mistake of the past and include menthol in Alberta’s flavoured tobacco ban.
“This is a basic question of people’s health,” says Swann. “The purpose of the flavoured tobacco ban is to reduce the appeal of these products to our children and prevent future addiction and serious health impacts. Menthol is one of the most commonly used tobacco flavorings by young people and it must be banned.”
Menthol was originally excluded from the flavoured tobacco by the former PC health minister, a decision that was criticized by Alberta Liberals and by the then opposition NDP.
“The New Democrats were quite clear where they stood on this matter when they were in opposition,” says Swann. “I am optimistic that they will do the right thing and ban menthol cigarettes.
“As they continue to assume their new roles and learn more about the issues of the day, I expect them to make the health of Albertans a top priority. If not, I will be holding them to account.”
